CHUS: Terrell, thanks for taking the time to let me ask you a few questions. First off, what type of hardware setup do you practice on? (cpu/video/mouse/mouse pad/monitor) CHUS: Great system! So it looks like you're taking things more seriously now. So in your own words, what is your definition of a "professional gamer" and do you fit into this category? CHUS: So you wouldn't consider yourself a "pro" gamer then? CHUS: So do you plan to attend the CPL Babbages tournament? CHUS: What type of preparations are you making for the tourney and what place can we expect to see you finish? CHUS: No Yoga or Zen chanting? CHUS: Do you consider your recent OT loss in cache's Challenge PlayThing a setback for you? CHUS: Lets move on to some more general topics. What are your thoughts on CPL's current map lineup, specifically ztn3dm1? CHUS: Right now the CPL has decided to use Quake3 version 1.17 over the new beta 1.25. What are your thoughts of this choice in relation to gameplay on Tourney4? CHUS: Agreed. T4 would become a camper's dream at RA. Lets move onto your recent move to join Clan Kapitol. I don't recall the exact reason for you leaving Ichorvile so can you elaborate on your leave from Ichorvile and the reasons you joined with cK? CHUS:Clan Kaptiol, like The Stickmen, have an extremely deep bench with talented players. Where do you fit in on cK's roster? CHUS: I understand your perspective on your recent move to the clan but I'm somewhat disappointed that we wouldn't be able to see you play your new clan tag when Clan Kapitol plays Ichorvile for QIL on November 4th. CHUS: Well thanks for your time and best of luck to you at Babbages and with Clan Kapitol.
With Matador recently leaving IchorVile to join Clan Kapitol and his domination in Cache's Challenge PlayThing Tournament, he is making waves in the Quake 3 scene once again. Terrell is definitely old school as I can recall several beatings on Q1Dm3 teamplay while he wore the TGR clan tag. Fast foward to Febraury, 2000 where he was instantly viewed as a 1v1 force when he beat [9]Vise at Quest Arena's first CPL Qualifier for the RazerCPL event. His success continued during the April RazerCPL event when he took down Insane, Timber, and Lobsta in back to back games and finished in the 9th-12th place bracket. He followed up these great achievments with a 2nd place finish to Zero4 at Quakecon 2000 and solidified his classification as a premier Quake 3 Arena dueller. In this interview we discuss professional gaming, his plans for the December Babbages CPL event, the ruleset for Babbage's CPL, and his decision to leave IchorVile to join with Clan Kapitol.
Matador: No problem...right now I have a 1Ghz Athlon, GeForce2, 19 monitor, and a big cloth mouse pad. I'm just now switching back to Wingman after using the Razer 1000 for 3 months.
Matador: Wow, good question. I think a pro-gamer is someone who makes enough money off gaming to pay the bills, but only a few people can do that now. So I guess for the time being a pro-gamer is someone who trains at the game, consistently places well at LAN tournaments, and someone who doesn't take themselves too seriously.
Matador: No, not really. I don't consider myself one. I do practice hard and I seem to be doing pretty good at the tournaments, but not enough to make a living off of. I've made about 10k this year in cash and prizes but I'm still on the lower tier of the top quake players.
Matador: I do.
Matador: I have an autoberth as well as a top 12 seed (I think). I've been lanning everyday for a few hours to prepare for it. My goal is top 8, ideal would be maybe top 3, but that will depend on luck. :) So I'm just gonna shoot for top 8.
Matador: Hehe, no yoga but I do like the Zen method of owning though.
Matador: No not really. I was playing LAN for about 2 hours before that match, went on a server where I was pinging 60, and played my best. Propolys is a tough opponent so I was happy to lose in OT rather then get raped. My style on LAN is much different from how I play on the net.
Matador: I have no problem with the maps. T2 and t4 are fun, dm6 is blah (luckily you can throw a map out of the dice roll) and ztn3dm1 is a good map. It plays much like dm13 and it has some cool strategy.
Matador: Well if we were using 1.25 I think t4 would probably be thrown out because the dynamics of the map would change. Im happy that they're sticking with 1.17 and that t4 will be used. This way it's more consistent for the players. I mean, we've all been playing 1.17 t4 for a while and it would be retarded to have to play it with a month's notice with different dynamics.
Matador: With the conclusion of Frag4, it's evident that teamplay is going in the right directions. It's going to be a spectator sport hopefully. I wanted to be involved with a team that has a good chance of competing at these LAN events. If corporate sponsors ever get involved with teams, then there will be locked rosters, contracts, and hopefully some hefty earnings and if we're really lucky, salaries. I joined IchorVile under the argument that I would make a solid 4th starter for the team and Revenant had a big factor in talking me into this. He talked me into joining, then leaves to The Stickmen a week later, sort of leaving me there. I was like WTF is going on? Basically I was put into a position where I felt I would have to lead the team and I didn't want this responsibility. I just want to play. With school and other things going on, I just want to be on a team where I could hop in and play, and do good. So when Rev left, I decided to leave and go clanless for a while. Needless to say cK was my old clan I had played with for 2 years, so I figured I might as well join my old team and stick with them before teamplay gets really huge.
Matador: I'm not sure yet, I feel my teamplay skills are top notch. But with Babbages on the horizon, I won't be a large factor on cK's bench just yet. We have our starting 4 laid out in stone so why ruin a good thing? I'm content to sit back and help them practice by doing interclan or helping solidify cK's 2nd string. But if I had the chance to start that would be great, but that won't likely be for a while, to say the least. I still need to learn our strategies for all the maps, and I'll be ready to step up whenever I'm needed.
Matador: I have to sit in timeout for clan hopping but it's all good. Orb is lanning here with me, and if he plays I'll be right behind him watching.
Matador:No problem.
